Signs Your Dog Is Stressed at the Groomer (and What to Do About It)

Dogs can't tell you they're uncomfortable — but they do show it. Here are the signs to look for, and how to find a groomer who genuinely handles them well.

Written by Joanne Taylor — SEG Level 3 accredited dog groomer at The Floof Spa in Herne Bay, Kent.

A stressed dog rarely bites. Most stressed dogs go quiet, go still, or try to disappear — and owners miss it, because 'they were so good at the groomer' often means 'they shut down'. Learning to read the signs changes how you choose a groomer.

What it means when a groomer misses these signs

It doesn't always mean the groomer is unkind. Busy salons under time pressure simply can't stop every appointment every time a dog yawns, and a 'frozen calm' dog looks like a cooperative one. But those sessions are teaching your dog that asking for a break doesn't work — which builds over years into real behaviour problems.
