What happens step by step?

1. Coat and handling discussion

Before the groom, discuss the coat's current condition, the finish you want, known sensitivities and relevant health or handling notes. A groomer can notice something worth flagging but does not perform a veterinary examination or diagnose skin, ear or mobility problems.

2. Preparation and brush-out

The coat is checked and prepared for bathing and styling. Tight matting can limit which finish is safe because prolonged pulling is painful. Joanne should discuss a practical alternative rather than promise to preserve any length. Read the matted-fur guide before trying to remove close matting at home.

3. Full-body wash and conditioner

Dog-appropriate shampoo cleans the coat, followed by conditioner and coat care suited to the appointment. Tell Joanne about diagnosed sensitivities before booking. Medicated products should only be used with suitable veterinary direction.

4. Blow dry and brush-out

Drying separates and prepares the coat for an even finish. Equipment and pace should respond to the individual dog, with supervision and breaks rather than assuming every dog tolerates the same airflow or sound.

5. Haircut and styling

Joanne clips or scissors the coat towards the agreed practical style. The dog's coat type, current condition and comfort determine what is achievable. A reference photo can help communicate the look, but it cannot override matting or coat differences.

6. Face, paws and hygiene areas

These areas are trimmed to create the agreed finish and keep high-maintenance areas practical. Face work can be sensitive, so the safest achievable result matters more than perfect symmetry.

7. Nails, ears and eyes

The package includes nail clipping plus routine ear and eye cleaning. This means surface cleaning appropriate to grooming — not deep ear treatment, ear plucking by default or diagnosis. Pain, odour, discharge or persistent head shaking needs a vet.

8. Coat care and fragrance finish

The coat receives its final care and light fragrance finish. Mention fragrance sensitivity or a preference to avoid fragrance when you enquire so Joanne can confirm what is suitable.
